Hilarious Celebrity Quotes, the 2012 Edition

Some years ago, Paris Hilton used to provide a constant source of amusement with her interviews, in which she sometimes slipped genuine pearls of wisdom and ridiculousness. Even though she’s been keeping a low profile as of late, there’s no need to panic: we still have silly quotes from other celebrities.

Stars, they’re just like us. Whether they’re trying to say something really memorable or just don’t think before they open their mouth, they can occasionally say the darndest things.

Sometimes, they simply say silly things because they’re less guarded in their interviews – those are the times we love them the most because they show us that, behind an army or publicists and media people, is a real person.

2012 has been a crazy year and Christmastime is the best occasion to just take a few minutes and have a look back on it.

We’ve had plenty of drama, more than a fair share of scandal, financial problems, losses and controversy. As gossip blogger Perez Hilton notes, we also had a healthy serving of humor and silliness.

Starting from the ridiculous excuses Lindsay Lohan made for herself on the promo trail for what was supposed to be her acting comeback “Liz & Dick,” to the never-ending source of hilarity that is Charlie Sheen and various quotes from the “Twilight” cast, below is confirmation that this year was indeed a fun one.

You know, just in case you st ill had doubts.

The 60-Second Microsoft Roundup: Ballmer Out, Windows 8 Issues and More

Christmas is almost here and the Redmond-based technology titan Microsoft still continues its efforts to show everyone that Windows 8 and the Surface RT are two excellent products.

On Monday, for example, a Microsoft spokesperson officially said that Windows 8 hasn’t missed sales expectations, adding that the new operating system is actually selling very well.

A web analytics firm revealed that hacking Internet Explorer is pretty easy due to a new vulnerability, while new data indicated that Windows 8 is now almost as popular as Linux. Despite all of these, Ballmer could be out if Windows 8 fails to impress.

On Tuesday, Microsoft publicly admitted that it was very surprised to see Google killing one of the key Gmail features, while Bill Gates has been accused of planning to control the world.

A Microsoft PR official repeatedly attacked a Google spokesperson on Twitter and a few hours later, Windows boss Julie Larson-Green talked about how important the Start Screen actually is for Windows 8 users.

VLC developers released the first mockups of the Windows 8 app on Wednesday, the same day when Microsoft explained why it decided to kill Pinball after Windows XP. Microsoft Surface was voted one of the best product names of 2012 and Windows 8 was described as an operating system that can become a seismic event for the industry.

The Redmond-based software giant released some advice on how to protect against Windows 8 hacks on Thursday, while the IE team continued to poke fun at critics by rolling out a new funny ad.

During the same day, it has emerged that Windows 8 is the first Windows version featuring the original American language thanks to a standalone language pack.

Finally on Friday, Microsoft officially relaunched a Patch Tuesday update to fix a Windows 7 font bug, while the company decided to kill off the Expression software tools. Microsoft sales have been disappointing, an analyst said and the company has tried once again to attract iOS developers to the new Windows 8 platform.

Your Say: Ballmer Must Leave as Soon as Possible

Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer may be forced to retire a bit earlier in case Windows 8 doesn’t manage to boost sales in the near future, some analysts have hinted, and according to our users, such a change would really come in handy for the Redmond-based technology company.

Even though Ballmer previously said that he wants to remain a Microsoft CEO until 2017 or 2018, the board may oust him a lot sooner, just because the company has started losing ground under his management.

Most of our user s agree that letting Ballmer go may really help Microsoft and revamp its business.

“Definitely, Steve Ballmer should be fired many years ago. Microsoft will become history if he is still running the company,” one of our readers said. “Rid of him.. he is not good ceo as windows 8 was shamble... so shove him out,” another added.

Users’ top choices for the CEO role? Bill Gates and Steven Sinofsky, the former Windows boss that reportedly left Microsoft because of growing tension between him and Ballmer.

“Yes, leave. But, crawl to Sinofsky and ask him to get back,” a reader explained. “The MS CEO should have been given to Steve Sinofsky of windows OS fame (no wonder he left too he probably cannot stand Ballmer either),” another comment reads.

There’s no doubt that Ballmer has managed to do quite a lot of great things while holding the M icrosoft CEO role, but most readers believe that Windows 8 is the living proof that the Redmond-based company needs an upper management shuffle.

“Windows 8 is a totally schizoid OS that is neither one thing nor another, any experienced IT admins can see windows 8 is another MS dog and wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole. Let’s see what windows 9 or 10 brings?” one of the users continued.

Does Ballmer really need to retire? As always, feel free to tell us what you think using the comment box after the jump.

GOTY 2012 Best Role-Playing Game: Diablo 3

A lot of role-playing games have appeared this year and most of them were of a high quality, even lower-priced independent titles like Torchlight 2 from Runic Games.

While there were a lot of RPG hybrids, which combined the mechanics of a role-playing game with other genres (like Far Cry 3 or Borderlands 2), the best pure RPG title of the year was Diablo 3.

Millions upon millions of fans eagerly awaited Diablo 3, largely because Blizzard Entertainment spent a very long time developing it, tweaking it, and hyping it up ahead of its actual release.

While some fans started losing hope in the game and were certainly scared by the fact that the actual title requires a permanent online connection, many didn't care and just wanted to play it.

This was reflected by the sales figures, as Diablo 3 managed to sell millions of copies in its first day.

The actual game wasn't that bad either, as after getting past the errors thrown up by the mandatory online connection, players were treated with a great dungeon crawler that tried to do quite a lot of new things while still respecting some of the mechanics from previous titles in the series.

With multiple difficulty modes, including the grueling Inferno, not to mention special modes like the Hardcore one, in which your character doesn't resurrect after its first death, the game caters to many types of players.

While some comp lained of its simplicity, Blizzard pointed out the special Elective mode which allowed them to pick and choose their actual skills, even if they couldn't really invest points in the attributes of their characters.

Speaking of classes, the game also offered a wide array of experiences, from the simple Barbarian to the complicated Witch Doctor, Demon Hunter, Monk, or Wizard, each with their strengths and weaknesses.

For its variety of experiences, its polished mechanics, and Blizzard's pledge to continue updating it, Diablo 3 is the best RPG of 2012.

Security Brief: Westboro Baptist Church and Twitter Hacks

Let's take a quick look at this past week's most important cyber security events. They're mostly focused on the OpWBC hacktivist operation, Twitter hacks, and the distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks on US banks.

The Newtown shooting has attracted a lot of attention. While most of the world mourned the victims and offered sympathy to their families, one organization, the Westboro Baptist Church, not only threatened to picket the funerals, but they also praised God for sending the shooter.

As soon as they heard, Anonymous hacktivists initiated OpWBC and started attacking the organization's websites.

They disrupted several sites, leaked information belonging to WBC members, and hacked the Twitter accounts of Fred Phelps Jr. and Shirley Phelps-Roper, the son and daughter of Fred Phelps Sr., the head of the Westboro Baptist Church.

Their Twitter accounts weren't the only ones taken over this week. The one of teen mom Farrah Abraham and the one of the Philippines' Department of Social Welfare and Development were also hijacked.

The YourAnonNews Twitter account has been suspended this week for around an hour after the hacktivists published the personal details of several WBC members.

As long as we're talking about Twitter, it's worth mentioning that the social me dia website has closed a very important security hole which affected the alternative login page.

It turns out that until a few days ago, all the credentials of users who signed in to the site by utilizing the drop-down form, the one that's shown when customers view a profile or a tweet without being logged in, were transmitted in plain text.

This week also marked the second part of phase two of Operation Ababil. Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters expressed regret for the Newtown incident, but that hasn't stopped them from attacking US banks.

Their latest targets are Wells Fargo, BB&T, US Bank and PNC.

Experts reveal some interesting things about these attacks: they're not as disruptive as the ones from the first part of the operation, and they've been used as a cover-up to commit banking fraud.

There has also been some interesting news about hacking-related lawsuits. Barrett Brown has pleaded not guilty to the Stratfor charges brought against him, and the hacker responsible for leaking private photos of several celebrities – including Scarlett Johansson – has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Other noteworthy hacks are the ones that targeted al-Qaeda websites, Yahoo!, some Croatian banks, and the Heroes of Newerth game.

Finally, Iran has identified another destructive piece of malware allegedly developed by Israel and the US. It's not as sophisticated as Stuxnet or other notorious threats, but experts warn that it could still be effective.

Weekend Reading: Winter Sales on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360

The winter holiday season is upon us and, for gamers, this usually means a wide variety of great sales, promotions, discounts, and offers, across all sorts of platforms, ranging from the PC to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, or even the recently released Nintendo Wii U.

Sadly, while all these promotions are great since you get to save a lot of money and complete your games collection, their big number can get quite confusing.

For example, only on the PC we've reported about the Steam Winter Ho liday sale, GOG's End of the World and Winter Sale, not to mention various other discounts ran by GameFly, GreenManGaming, and other such websites.

Things are also quite complex on consoles. While both Microsoft and Nintendo are running their own sales, Sony is organizing all sorts of promotions across the continents. In Europe, we have the 12 Deals of Christmas and the Festive sale, while North Americans can enjoy the Holiday Essentials and the Play Days one.

While this means that you have enough variants to choose from, it also means that you need to sift through each promotion, see where you can score the biggest discount, get it, and then start the whole process all over again.

For example, Sony discounts Hitman: Absolution by 50% on the European PlayStation Store but Steam also had a price cut for the same game, alongside others in the franchise. If you have both a PS3 and a gaming PC, then you need to decide what service will get your money.

My idea is quite simple: one Winter Sale to rule them all. Gamers should be able to enjoy a single promotion across the PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and even the Wii U with the same prices no matter the territory.

Sadly, even as I type this I pretty much know it won't be adopted, as console manufacturers are extremely picky about their promotions and many don't even want owners of other devices to take advantage of the same deals they're offering.

This is a shame, as it only ends up hurting gamers who just want to score some great discounts.

Acer Reportedly Plans Its Own $99 7-Inch Android Tablet

Computer maker Acer is reportedly gearing up for the launch of a cheap Android tablet that will sport a 7-inch touchscreen display, the same as Google’s already highly popular Nexus 7 slate.

The new slate is said to land on shelves in the first quarter of the next year, and should sport a price tag of around $99 (€75), a recent report on DigiTimes reads.

Rumor has it that Acer is set to pack the device with a MediaTek processor, which will help the company reduce production costs for it. However, nothing has been officially confirmed on this for the time being.

The info reportedly comes from sources with the Taiwan-based supply chain makers, who claim that ASUS also had such a device under development, but did not launch it due to its collaboration with Google on the Nexus 7 device.

The Hawaiian Islands Are Dissolving, Might Eventually Fall off the Map

A new study carried out by scientists working with the Birgham Young University claims that the Hawaiian islands are dissolving, and that at some point in the future they might fall off the map completely.

More precisely, they discovered that the mountains found on Oahu (Koolau and Waianae), Hawaii's third largest island, are being eroded from within by groundwater. Thus, they are quite likely to shrink as the years go by, and ultimately turn into plains.

In all fairness, it must be made clear th at soil erosion also has a say in this, yet it seems that said groundwater must be listed as the major culprit, Science Daily explains.

The scientists reached this conclusion after comparing and contrasting the chemical makeup of Oahu's groundwater and its water streams. The process of collecting samples and analyzing them took about two months, yet the researchers believe that is was all worthwhile.

Thus, they found that the former contained significantly more minerals than the latter, which basically means that groundwater is wearing down these mountains much faster than the streams flowing on their surface are.

However, it will be about 1.5 million years before these mountains begin their descent, seeing how, for the time being at least, plate tectonics are making sure that the island's elevation is increasing by pushing it towards the northwest.

“We tried to figure out how fast the island is going a way and what the influence of climate is on that rate. More material is dissolving from those islands than what is being carried off through erosion,” explained geologist Steve Nelson from said university.

Furthermore, “All of the Hawaiian Islands are made of just one kind of rock. The weathering rates are variable, too, because rainfall is so variable, so it's a great natural laboratory.”

The study was published in the Journal Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta.

HTC M7 Concept Rendering Emerge

Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC Corporation is expected to bring to the Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona a new high-end device, rumored to land on shelves as HTC M7.

The phone is said to sport a high-resolution touchscreen display, along with a powerful processor inside, and to run under Google’s Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system.

While nothing has been officially confirmed on the new handset, enthusiasts are already dreaming of it, and some even come up with their own renderings of the phone, based on previously leaked info.

Hasan Kaymak is one such enthusiast, who envisioned the upcoming 2013 Android-based flagship handset from HTC with looks similar to those of HTC Butterfly.

The HTC M7 concept device sports a 4.7 inch SLCD 3 touchscreen display that can deliver a 1080p resolution, while also featuring a 1.7 GHz quad-core processor inside, most probably with an upgraded graphical unit.

Furthermore, the handset sports a 13-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with support for full HD video recording capabilities, along with a 2.1-megapixel front camera for making video calls.

The upcoming mobile phone also sports Beats Audio integration, along with a 2300 mAh battery, as well as the usual set of connectivity options found in today’s high-end devices.

The concept device runs under Google’s Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating syst em, with HTC’s own Sense 5.0 user interface loaded on top, specifically built to fit the outer design of the smartphone.

HTC has yet to officially confirm the existence of this smartphone, as well as the hardware specs and features that it would arrive on shelves with, so we’ll take the available info on its capabilities with a grain of salt for the time being.

However, should the handset indeed resemble the concept phone that can be seen in the photos attached to this article, it will certainly prove a hit, thus helping HTC regain its foothold on the smartphone segment.

2012 was the hottest year on record for the US, which is why few citizens in this country remain to doubt climate change, global warming and their effects on human society.

This video was only recently released by Climate Desk, a journalistic collaboration whose sole purpose is that of raising awareness with respect to said phenomena, and documents the extreme weather manifestations that people living in the US have experienced over the past few months.

Thus, the country faces severe droughts and rather powerful freak storms, which stand as proof that something must soon be done in order to push for sustainability and greener living standards.

Loyal Dog Ignores Traffic, Stands by Its Dead Mate for 6 Hours

Only recently, a male dog in China drew significant amounts of attention after it refused to abandon its dead mate and kept guard over its body, despite the fact that it found itself in the middle of the street and that cars were rushing all around it.

Sources report that the female dog got hit by a vehicle and died almost instantaneously. However, the male kept hoping that it would perhaps wake up sooner or later, which is why it remained by its side for nearly 6 hours.

“He stayed beside her the whole day, keeping licking her and pushing her, trying to wake her up. It's very touching. Then he pushed her with his head, and licked her face. I even saw tears,” one eyewitness recollects.

The two were separated when authorities came and removed the dog's dead mate.

Weekend Reading: Taking Part in the Video Games Revolution

I have so far backed two Kickstarter video game projects, one of which, the Project Infinity from Obsidian, actually got the funding it wanted and will be launched in 2014.

The other one was withdrawn, even though it could have hit its own target, because the development team was able to communicate with the fan base and understood that the core concept was flawed and how it could be improved.

I also backed a video game-related podcast series, the excellent Idle Thumbs revival, and a series of monthly a rticles, Tom vs. Bruce, which show the pair playing a game in a competitive manner.

Eighteen years ago, when I first started playing games (the original Prince or Persia and a F1 simulation), I would not have been able to do anything similar and my only way of contributing to the video game industry other than buying games or picking up a magazine that wrote about them.

Now I am almost buried under video game podcasts I have not yet listened to and articles that offer interesting insight.

And I, and like me millions of other players, can also choose to contribute in different ways and actually influence the kind of experiences that developers and publishers deliver in the coming years.

Developers, from small indie teams to those at Treyarch and BioWare, are more open than ever to input from potential customers and they are taking to forums and Twitter to ask questions and evaluate reactions.

Pa yments services, credit card companies and crowd funding make it easier than ever for an idea to get past the prototype phase and become a real podcast, something a player can actually engage with and experiment.

We live in an age of possibilities for video game creators and players and my only wish is that more of us would use the opportunities of the current revolution and contribute with either ideas or money, to get better games in the future.

Apple Confirms iMac Late 2012 Models Are Incompatible with VESA Mounts

Apple this week confirmed in two separate instances that the latest iMac models are incompatible with the popular VESA mounts used to suspend all-in-one systems on different types of surfaces.

Originally confirmed by Apple representative Laura Metz, the compatibility issue makes it impossible to use the newest generation of iMacs with wall mounts, articulating arms, and other mounting gear.

Mrs Metz said “[Apple] will take it into consideration,” referring to the incompatibility issue, suggesting that the Cupertino company itself might roll out a solution in the future.”

Further such hints are dropped in a new KB article on Apple Support titled “iMac (Late 2012): VESA mount adapter not compatible.” In the Support document Apple states, “The new iMac (21.5-inch and 27-inch, Late 2012) is not VESA mount compatible at this time.” (emphasis ours).

Needless to point out, Apple’s design guru Jonathan Ive could easily think up an adapter for the VESA mount.

Capcom Wants Player Feedback on Digital Launch Plans

Video game publisher Capcom wants to know what players want when it comes to digital launches in order to decide how to best launch its core franchises, ranging from Resident Evil to Mega Men, in the coming years.

A survey has been published by the company and the questions asked involve favorite Capcom franchises, suggestions on remakes and re-releases, details about buying habits.

Christian Svensson, who is a vice president at Capcom, has promised that the data would be discussed during January inside the company and that it would inform on its long-term strategy.

Capcom has recently announced worse than expected financial results, mostly linked to the disappointment performance of Resident Evil 6.

The company is also delaying the Japanese launch of Monster Hunter 4 for an indefinite period to improve the game’s quality.

Softpedia Exclusive Interview: Andrei Avdnei, Founder of DefCamp

A couple of weeks ago we participated at DefCamp, Romania's most important security conference. We attended some interesting talks, but we also witnessed an evolution of the conference itself.

We wanted to learn more about DefCamp and the direction it's heading, so we've asked Andrei Avădănei, the conference's founder and CEO, to have an interview with us.

We've discussed future plans, the challenges of hosting such an event, and sideline projects such as the CCSIR, or the Cyber Security Research Center from Romania.

Softpedia: Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Andrei Avădănei: My name is Andrei Avădănei, I am the founder and CEO for DefCamp, the largest hacking & INFOSEC conference from Romania.

Throughout the last 7 years since I have been striving to make something in the IT field I have also been trying to keep in touch with the modern technology and IT security by various activities among which I wish to highlight a few that molded my career:

- algorithmics, web development, software development and IT security competitions, (local, national, international) where I participated have managed to educate myself with a competitive thinking, always trying to raise the bar;

- worldit.info, an online Romanian IT community;

- GREPIT, a non-g overnmental institution that organizes an IT competition for more than 7 years and it managed to introduce me to the environment of event organization;

- OpenIT, the first event co-organized by myself, in Suceava, Romania, where 60-70 highschool students competed against each other in 12 hours of programming the tasks we elaborated.

Softpedia: When did you become interested in information security? Was there any particular event that triggered your interest?

Andrei Avădănei: I became interested in IT security at the exact moment when the trigger activated my desire to work in the IT domain. Seven years ago I was a big fan of games and I was addicted of Counter-Strike 1.6, but I was already bored and I had already found out about the available cheats.

Unfortunately, the cheats I was using were already detectable by the protection systems installed on servers I was playing.

I got so angry that I was willing to write an application for CS 1.6 which was undetectable: this is how I found out about the vast IT domain. I never wrote that program because I made cooler stuff, but since then I have been trying to discover new things on a daily basis.

Funny, isn't it?

Softpedia: How did you come up with the idea of launching DefCamp?

Andrei Avădănei: The idea of DefCamp crossed my mind shortly after organizing the OpenIT contest. I was very close to decide whether we would continue that competition the way it was or make a change (I wish to highlight that nothing about OpenIT had anything to do with IT security).

In the spring of 2011, among the IT security underground communities from Romania, the complaints start ed to appear; everyone wanted something new so I wanted to build an offline environment that would provide us an easier and cheaper access to abroad resources.

That's how the idea of “DefCamp” was born – on an usual day of March-April 2011 we drew our logo in Paint (we are hackers, not designers) and slowly but surely we prepared ourselves for the first edition of it at the end of September, the same year. We have not stopped since that moment.

Softpedia: Please tell us a bit about your team. Although you’re the “mastermind” of DefCamp, there are probably many people helping out.

Andrei Avădănei: I say that our team works the same way as a decentralized P2P software works. I try to coordinate the whole activity and the numerous extremely important issues as brushing up the whole pla n, step by step, also the relationship with the partners, the search for new sponsors and partners, but I was always, in every phase, helped out by my colleagues.

This team has been made out of 1 to 3 people since the third edition, but at DefCamp 2012 @Bucharest we were almost 10 people who directly contributed to the organization of the event and a few dozens of other people who were involved in different stages of the event.

Considering that the conference is a volunteer-based event, I believe it is impressive that we managed to gather over 20 speakers from 6 countries (Romania, Moldavia, Hungary, Slovenia, Ireland, USA).

The interesting part is that no DefCamp organizer comes from an environment exclusively based on event organization, we are all technical people with a clear vision of what we want to do.

Softpedia: You’ve come a long way since you first star ted. How far are you planning to take DefCamp? Should we expect it to become something that would compete with world renowned conferences?

Andrei Avădănei: It hasn't been so long. We are small if compared to the present events in Europe. We will definitely not stop here and one of our targets is not to be forced to leave Romania to find the pulse of the IT security on the planet.

We want to grow more and more not only in size, but also in the quality of the events regarding the technical part and, who knows, in 3-5 years we will be on the same level as our colleagues abroad. It is clear that everything is up to us and the community around DefCamp.

Softpedia: You must have received some feedback from this year’s attendees. What did they say after the conference?

Andrei Avădănei: It is quite difficult to answer without being subjective, because there were various opinions, from simple greetings to collaboration ideas, constructive ideas but also complaints which mostly concern logistics.

Indubitable is that the ones who have been following us from the first edition have noticed the growth of the event in all its branches – logistics, the number and the quality of the presentations and the participants, activities. What could be more beautiful than this?

Softpedia: I’ve seen a lot of (very) young participants at this year’s edition of DefCamp. Considering that most of the hackers that make headlines these days are very young, do you think that by participating in such conferences they could be influenced to take the “white” path of infosec?

A ndrei Avădănei: The human mind is an unpredictable and hard to control environment. We are trying to take attitude every time we can when it comes to the illegal side of this environment and we try to promote the good practices when needed.

The youngsters can see that cool things can be made legally, so we try to show them this thing. The rest is up to them. In exceptional cases we get under our wing the people with potential and we teach them to do things the right way.

Softpedia: What is the biggest challenge when organizing an infosec conference?

Andrei Avădănei: This is a great question. The IT security events, at least in Romania, are extremely hard to build because we are very paranoid. I think that the most difficult thing to be controlled is, at such an event, the paranoid people, some of the organizers o r the participants confront before, during the event and after the event.

More than that, it is very difficult to keep the image of the event clean because the interpretations from the INFOSEC environment are made on a daily basis and the line between black hat and white hat is very thin.

The ones unaware, but with sufficient media power, can ruin our work before you can say knife.

Softpedia: What can you tell us about your immediate plans? I know you probably want to keep it a surprise, but can you give us a hint?

Andrei Avădănei: My near future plans involve a calendar which we will guide after in 2013 regarding the organization of the following DefCamp edition. It is funny that, so far, all DefCamp events were organized, from their launch to the offline meeting, in a record time which has always been less t han one month and a half.

We now dedicate a full year to some phases of the event; it is high time we got to the next level. My plans, at the moment, include a few large INFOSEC projects which will be launched soon, depending on how fast and how capable we are to put them into effect.

This is the most difficult thing now, we have limited resources and experience that can guide us, almost everything has to be tested and most of the times we take a risk.

Softpedia: I know that you’ve recently launched CCSIR. What can you tell us about this new project?

Andrei Avădănei: Oh, CCSIR or the Cyber Security Research Center from Romania is the child of DefCamp.

We still do not give out details but, briefly, it will be an official communication platform for the center, we will be having a research department with the main job of discovering new vulnerabilities in various virtual environments (and maybe not only).

We will also be having a department which has to come up with ideas for projects and also the 0xDEF department which will be our official CTF (Capture the Flag) team which we hope to make us famous in the international competitions in this domain. There will be more surprises. All in good time. :-)

Softpedia: You’ve recently written an interesting blog post on the differences between hackers, crackers, thieves and security researchers. Do you think that the fact that they’re often placed under the same umbrella affects the industry, particularly security researchers?

Andrei Avădănei: Frankly, I do not think that it directly affects the industry in any way. People in this domain are able to identify each one and most of the times they do a lot of research before making a statement. Anyway, the image of the industry is affected so many times by the press which, indirectly, can affect us particularly.

For example, I heard some rumors that a company did not want to come to DefCamp because we were media partners with a community of IT security that was involved in a scandal it didn't deserve.

It can be said that we were collateral victims in that particular case but, after all, we are a group of people who speak the same language and we surely understand more than the press tries to manipulate us to understand sometimes.

The Real Reason Google Is Building the X Phone Isnt Apple, Its Samsung Forking Android

Google's Motorola is said to be working on a flagship Android phone, dubbed the X Phone project, and it's going all out with it. It's been looking at bendable displays, ceramic casing and everything in between to try to make the phone stand out.

The phone is slated to land next year, though Google is still mostly experimenting with new features and technologies. A tablet is said to follow the phone.

When Google acquired Motorola, it ensured everyone that it wouldn't be getting any preferential treatment and, to date, it hasn't.

Motorola phones are running Android versions closer to the stock one, they're getting updates faster and come with Chrome pre-installed, but they're still not top-of-the-line and don't sell very well.

In fact, Samsung now accounts for around half of all Android phone sales. Motorola is at the bottom of the list.

You could argue that it doesn't really matter to Google, it doesn't make any money from Android, it makes money from the ads it runs on Android devices, on the web and in apps.

But that's only true if people stick to the regular version of Android, which is increasingly not the case. Amazon was the only Android tablet maker to sell any meaningful number of devices, but it was running a forked version of Android.

The Kindle Fire scared Google quite a bit and for good reason. A few months later, the Nexus 7 came about and became the first stock Android tablet to sell well. The Nexus 10 probably won't be as successful, but at least Google stemmed the tide.

Things are better when it comes to phones, for now. Samsung runs a heavily skinned version of Android on its phones, but at least it's a proper Android, with the Play Store and everything else. But what if Samsung decided to fork Android and come up with its own version?

It's not likely, and it's going to be a tough sell, but Samsung has the money and the sales numbers to try something like this. If anything, it gives Samsung a big leverage when negotiating with Google, so it could push it to add features to Android or make changes and so on.

Google doesn't want any one company having so much power over its platform, so the Google X phone has more to do with providing a flagship Android device with a pure Google experience than with taking on Apple.

Samsung forking Androi d isn't as farfetched as it may seem, though it won't be easy, for some very big reasons; it would have to give up the Play Store and any Google app. Samsung would have to build its own app store and that's a big challenge.

Granted, apps for Android will work on Samsung's version, so developers won't have to make different ones. But Samsung buyers will also have to make do without Google Now, YouTube, Gmail or Google Maps. Considering that not even Apple can pull this off, it's hard to imagine Samsung doing any better.

Facebook Just Launched the Official Poking App for iPhone and iPad

Apparently poking is so popular among Facebook aficionados that it deserved its own dedicated iOS app. Facebook has just launched the official poking application for all iDevices running iOS 5.1 (and newer versions), enabling everyone to jab their friends with a message, photo, or video.

“Poke your friends to share fun moments or just say hello,” says Facebook, promoting its latest release for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users.

You can poke a friend with a message, photo or video, and choose how long they can see it via a few simple taps in the settings menu. Users can press and hold to see pokes from friends, disclose their poking location and, in typical Facebook manner, see when their friends take screenshots.

Requirements include iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad, as well as iOS 5.1 or later. The app is fully optimized for the iPhone 5’s Retina display.

BioShock Infinite Is as Long as BioShock 1, Has a Different Feel

Ken Levine, the creative director of Irrational Games and the man behind the upcoming BioShock Infinite title, has talked about the new game and how it compares to BioShock 1, the cult classic game that impressed millions of people from all around the world.

BioShock Infinite is out in March and we're starting to hear a lot of new details about the game and see all sorts of new videos and screenshots with the upcoming shooter.

In order to share even more info about the game, its creator, Ken Levine , has talked with fans on Reddit as part of a special Ask Me Anything feature on the popular website.

Levine first tackled the comparison to BioShock 1 of Infinite, saying that players have a lot of freedom when it comes to customizing their gear and powers, and might be tempted to replay the game for the story.

"I'd say it's very much like BioShock 1 in terms of length and replay," he said, when asked how long Infinite is. "Perhaps a bit more, because we have this very large selection of gear and vigor and weapon upgrades. There's another kind of replay value which is more story oriented, but I can't really talk about that without spoiling."

Levine continued comparing the two titles and emphasized that, while you reach the city of Rapture in BioShock 1 after its collapse, you infiltrate Infinite's city of Columbia just as it's descending into civil war.

"The backstory won't be about a col lapse, because when you get there, the city is very much alive and kicking. I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say the past matters in a very serious way in this game. Shawn Elliott said that where the last game was about Archeology, this game is also about Anthropology, in other words, you get stories from both the living and the dead in Infinite."

Fans will get to see just how BioShock Infinite compares to the original on March 26, when it's going to appear for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Indias Playboy Bunnies Are Surprisingly Covered Up

The first Playboy club is set to open in India next year, and the brand is adapting its classic Playgirl image to Indian standards, or at least they're trying to.

The bunnies are still scantily dressed, but a bit more fabric is used to manufacture their India-tailored costumes.

As you can see, the Playboy lingerie costume has been mixed with a sari, giving birth to something that looks like an Indian bathing suit. The girls wear skirts, however sheer, and their tube tops come complete with draping over one shoulder.

According to India Realtime, New-York based designer Mohini Tadikonda put together this bunny ensemble.

At first, the company will bring foreign waitresses to their club location in Goa.

“We are open to hiring Indian women too,” says Sanjay Gupta, chief executive officer of PB Lifestyle Ltd.

Antivirus Solutions Still Have Problems in Blocking Fake AV, Experts Say

Zscaler researchers make an interesting point about fake antiviruses, also known as scareware. Despite the fact that they've been around for several years, many security solutions are still incapable of blocking these threats.

Researchers highlight the fact that, overall, scareware has remained the same as it was a few years ago. The names of the bogus applications may have changed, but other than that, they're pretty much the same.

A perfect example is the Win 7 Anti-Spyware 2011 piece of scareware which we detailed a few days ago.

The threat is undetected by most security applications, and when it finds itself on a computer, it starts causing serious damage.

It disables the firewall, the legitimate antivirus application, disables all security warnings and it creates registry entries to ensure that it has full control over the infected device.

Furthermore, it wraps any executable run by the user, so when any application is run, the scareware steps into play, alerting the victim about all sorts of Trojans and Worms that can be allegedly cleaned only by registering the bogus antivirus.

While performing our tests, we've managed to remove the scareware in approximately two hours, but for a regular user the task would not be easy.

Nokia Lumia 920 Will Arrive at Three UK Too

Lumia 920, the flagship Windows Phone 8 smartphone that the Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia has brought to the market a few months ago, will arrive on shelves at wireless carrier Three UK as well.

The device was launched in the country exclusively on EE’s network, but it seems that the exclusivity period is nearing its end, and that other wireless carriers in the UK are also looking to pick up the device.

Vodafone UK confirmed similar plans earlier this week, and now Three UK said that it was indeed planning the launch of this smartphone.

Lumia 920 was unveiled with a 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ screen, a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor inside, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of internal memory, an 8-megapixel PureView photo snapper on the back, front camera for video calling, and support for 4G LTE networks.

LeAnn Rimes Wasnt Drunk on X Factor, She Was Just Happy, Says Simon Cowell

To all those out there saying LeAnn Rimes was either drunk or on pills during her duet with Carly Rose Sonenclar on X Factor USA, Simon Cowell has one thing to say: that was the face and behavior of a very “happy” woman.

TMZ paparazzi caught up with Mr. Nasty himself the other night and, since he imported X Factor from the UK, considered he was the best to clarify the mystery around Rimes’ awful performance.

As you can see in the video below, Simon says LeAnn wasn’t drunk, she was “just very happy.” TMZ believes Simon’s smile and face actually say more than he does in words.

After the debacle on the Divas Duets night, LeAnn has gone into hiding.

Carly’s family, on the other hand, is said to be fuming mad that she would blame her terrible performance on Carly by saying she was just trying to help her out.

Microsoft Surface with Windows 8 Pro Hits the FCC

Microsoft has already announced that it plans to launch the new Surface with Windows 8 Pro, also known as the Surface Pro, in January, but the company has made another important step to get the device on the market by sending it to the FCC.

Engadget reports that an unidentified tablet called “model 1514” and created by Microsoft has requested FCC’s approval, so chances are that the Surface Pro is getting ready to hit the shelves.

There are several indications that “model 1514” is actually the Surface Pro, as the device is described as running Windows 8 and its codename is very close to the one used by the RT version in the FCC fillings – 1516.

Although Microsoft is yet to announce the launch date, the device will go live in less than 30 days, with pricing to start at $899 (€682) for the cheapest model.

Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller - Episode 1: The Hangman (PC)

Stepping out of the dark and into the light with the fan-game sequel to King's Quest, The Silver Lining, Phoenix Online Studios turns to the crowd (and by that I mean Kickstarter) in order to develop a ten-year-old dream: an episodic adventure game in the spirit of Dexter and Heavy Rain.

Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller is a traditional detective-adventure game with all the right pieces: a gripping storyline, paranormal filled scenes, all the violence and crime you could ask for, a good-looking female FBI agent and an ending that will leave you wanting for more.

Will the developers be able to assemble these elements into an irresistible package? Let's find out.

Story

Take on the role of Erica Reed, an FBI agent from Boston, Massachusetts, scarred by the loss of her brother to a serial killer (Cain Killer) whose modus operandi is very gruesome and who has a thing for torturing siblings. The game starts to unravel when Erica's boss, Davies, closes the case and re-assigns her to another strange murder.

Just like in the case of her brother, Erica deals with a serial killer that enjoys making the victim suffer. Help the FBI agent follow the bread crumbs and piece together clues that will lead her to a suspect.

In order to crack this new case, Erica develops new paranormal abilities and improves her old cognition gift, with the help of an antique shop owner by the name of Rose. Will these be enough to save her boss from the Hangman killer?

Review image Review image
What seems ordinary to us ...
... can hide secrets for Erica Reed

Unlike most adventure games, this one doesn't have a starting story that grows along with the game; it will thrust you in the middle of events and it's up to you and to your imagination to glue the cinematic scenes together and get the bigger picture.

Gameplay

The game opens with a usual Unity engine start-up screen, where you can choose the screen's resolution and graphic quality and where you can also change the control input. Even in the Options menu itself, there aren't many customizable elements, b ut the notable ones are anti-aliasing, hints and tutorials.

If you think Cognition is a typical point-and-click adventure game, you're a bit off. The game also incorporates a paranormal side, so besides obvious puzzles, you must also know how, when and on what to use your psychic powers.

Before being thrown in the main case of The Hangman, you'll learn a little about the main character, Erica Reed, and the death of her younger brother. The “prequel” that happens three years in the past, sets the tone of the game: pressure and urgency, stress-filled acti on, explicit violence scenes, abnormal abilities and, of course, intriguing puzzles.

The game starts with the new case, the hanging of a John Doe, that turns out to be the work of an evil mastermind. Leaving almost no evidence at the crime scene, Erica must scour the entire city of Boston, investigate, take statements and gather clues that might lead her to the killer.

In order to travel though the huge city, you'll get a map with the most important locations. Once the game progresses, more and more locations become available. If sometimes you see the red light of a location blinking, make your way there as fast as possible, as that scene has something important to offer. The hard part comes when there's no blinking red button and you must search each location and try to find useful objects in each of them.

Cognition is filled with brain-bending puzzles, inventory combinations and, of course, the usage of your paranormal ski lls. Each beautifully crafted scene requires intense investigation: you must first look at an object in order to allow a certain action to happen or in order to make further progress. Some scenes require several playthroughs in order to find every required object.

Even from the second scene of the game, you'll be acquainted with your first paranormal ability: Cognition. Using this skill, you'll be able to see the past actions associated with a significant object. Playing the game will allow you to uncover two more, very useful powers: Projection and Regression. With Projection, you must select three related hotspots (objects) in order to project evidence that previously existed in a certain scene. Regression allows you to enter a person's mind and it's best used with interrogation techniques.

Review image Review image
Explore the city of Boston ...
... down to the most hidden places

The hint system took me back in time to the old adventure games, where the in-game help didn't give too much information, but it did reveal enough to help you advance to the next scene. In order to use the hints, just press the spacebar key on your keyboard.

The characters are a bit one-dimensional, but keep in mind that this is only the first game in the series, so its objective is to familiarize the player with the most important characters. Even though they look and talk in a convincing manner, the dialogue can sometimes get a bit boring, mostly due to clichés. The discussions between Erica and her partner are like a scene from the old Kojak movie, while the dialogues with Rose made me feel like I was playing Jennifer Love Hewitt in the Ghost Whisperer (minus the low-cut shirts).

The Erica Reed Thriller can provide challenges even for experienced adventure seekers, as well as for beginners to the genre. Even if sometimes things seem impossible, all the puzzles can be solved with patience and perseverance.

Video and Audio

The first episode in the Cognition series features hand-painted backgrounds, characters, objects (2D) and also hand-painted cinematics (3D), so a lot of work was put into the creation of each scene. The locations Erica visits seem almost real, though the design of the characters, bulky at times, will bring you down into the video gaming wo rld.

The cut-scenes are animated artwork with a comic-book feel, and even if the hand drawings are pretty good, in my opinion the animations drag the scales down with the lack of movement fluidity and the occasional wall slips. These small bugs make the game look unprofessionally crafted, although you can tell that a lot of effort has been poured into making it. There's no need to worry though, these problems have also been seen in some major titles – yes, I'm talking about you, Fallout: New Vegas.

The soundtrack, with obvious industrial rock influences, places a well-deserved plus sign near the game's name, as each scene comes to life thanks to the right tune.

Conclusion

I must admit that playing it made me feel like a detective and I'm starting to appreciate the hard work lawmen put into solving a case. If the detective part ever gets boring, the game turns to its paranormal side to keep everyone entertained.

Even though the animations are a bit faulty, the amount of work that the developers put into this project almost surfaces while playing the game. Solid story with paranormal elements, gorgeous hand-drawn scenes, above average puzzles and a great ending (for the first episode in a series) make this game a must-have in every gamer's inventory.
