Sony Leader Says Vita Progress Is a Marathon, Not a Sprint

John Koller, the executive in charge of handheld sales at Sony Computer Entertainment of America, says that the Vita device from his company has the ability to sell well during the coming holiday season and that its progress should be seen as a marathon and not as a sprint race.

The Sony executive tells GamesIndustry.biz that, “it’s certainly going to be a marathon for Vita. It’s going to be a very good, solid platform for us, one that performs very well.”

Koller believes that Sony has a strong line-up of video games, to be launched before the end of the year, that will manage to attract attention to the PlayStation Vita and will push sales higher.

He adds, “If you look at a game like Assassin’s Creed: Liberation that’s coming, it’s a fantastic game. Call of Duty is going to be a very strong game, particularly multi-player is going to be fantastic.”

The experience that Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty offer cannot be obtained from any other handheld or any other mobile gaming device and Koller believes that hardcore gamers will flock to the Vita in order to experience them.

The executive has also cited the Vita versions of the new Need for Speed: Most Wanted and that of PlayStation All-Star Battle Royale as other titles that can generate sales.

The PlayStation Vita was launched with a lot of fanfare and a big marketing push from Sony, but the device ha s failed to generate the sales that the hardware maker was predicting.

Still, the company says that it is satisfied with the level of business for the new handheld and that it has long-term plans for it.

This holiday season will witness the launch of the new Wii U home console from Nintendo and it is highly unlikely that gamers that pick it up will have any disposable income left to buy a mobile device like the Vita.

New Project Infinity Update Talks Armor, Fulfillment

The developer at Obsidian have offered another update for their Project Infinity, going in depth on the process they are using to create the armor that characters will use in the game and giving fans who have supported the crowd funding effort for the game some more information on their pledges.

The update tackles how the team plans to combine a commitment to the old mechanics of the role-playing genre and the fact that they are creating a game that needs to appeal to a modern audience.

The post on the official si te offers an in-depth look at how the various editions of Dungeons & Dragons have tackled the idea of armors and how they influence the development process for computer based role-playing titles.

The developers state their aim is “designing a new armor system that rectifies deficiencies of older systems while maintaining a familiar feel is tricky. Additionally, the more dissimilar the armor relationships are to those found in A/D&D, the more they will be re-evaluated for verisimilitude.”

Project Eternity will have a variety of character classes and Obsidian wants each of them to have a preferred armor type, but at the same time gamers will be free to choose based on their own interests.

The developer explain who they might structure their armor tiers, but the update focuses more on questions and possibilities than on clear information about the game, which is normal given that the game is currently in the early st age of development.

Obsidian is also planning to launch a separate fulfillment site for Project Eternity, which will allow all those who gave money so far to view the exact status of their pledge.

Project Eternity is a top-down party-based role-playing game that will be available on the PC during late 2014.

The game got more than 3 million dollars (2.31 million Euro) from fans.

The smartphone also comes with a 4.3-inch touchscreen display, 1GB of RAM inside, 4GB of internal memory, a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, and a front camera for making video calls while on the go.

A few days ago was only a rumour, but today, October 31st, we’re unhappy to announce that the upcoming Ubuntu 13.04 operating system from Canonical will have a single Beta release and no Alphas, not even a Release Candidate.

As you all know, Ubuntu Developer Summit (UDS) for Ubuntu 13.04 is happening these days, between October 29th and November 1st, in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Among various other hot topics from UDS-R, one that caught our attention is the drastically changed Release Schedule for Ubuntu 13.04 ( Raring Ringtail), due for release on April 25th, 2013.

So, what exactly was so drastically changed? Well, first of all there won’t be any Alpha releases. Second of all, the Release Candidate is also gone from the development cycle. Instead, we will get just a single Beta release for testing!

Yes, that’s true, according to Nicholas Skaggs, the Ubuntu QA community coordinator for Canonical, who says “The Release schedule has dropped all alphas, and the first beta, resulting in a beta and then final release milestone only.”

“In addition, the freezes have been moved back a few weeks. The end result is the archive will not be frozen till late in the cycle, allowing development and testing to continue unencumbered. This of course is for ubuntu only. Which brings us to flavors!” he added.

In conclusion, this Beta release of Ubuntu 13.04 will arrive on March 28th, 2013 - five months from now. But don&rsq uo;t worry, this won’t happen to the other flavors, such as Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.

Dubbed Raring Ringtail, Ubuntu 13.04 will be the 18th release of the Ubuntu operating system, and it will see the light of day on April 25th, 2013.

Stay tuned for more news from the Ubuntu Developer Summit event for Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) on our Softpedia Linux section.

New LGA 1155 Micro-ATX Motherboard Launched by ECS

Even though PC sales aren't expected to rise all that much, Windows 8 or no, motherboard makers continue to sell all kinds of platforms. In this particular instance, Elitegroup Computer Systems is presenting one.

The mainboard has the micro-ATX form factor and bears the name of H61H2-MV, which does a good job of revealing which chipset is used as the basis.

Contrary to what its name might suggest, the Intel H61 Express chipset is actually the low-end core logic for LGA 1155 central processing units (Sand y Bridge and Ivy Bridge).

The socket is powered by a 3+1+1 phase VRM and is wired to a pair of memory slots (DDR3-1600 DIMM), for a maximum capacity of 16 GB.

Two expansion slots are available as well. One of them is a PCI Express 2.0 x1 slot, while the other is a PCI Express 2.0 x16 for graphics cards.

Furthermore, ECS included four SATA 3.0 Gbps ports (all wired to the PCH, like the PCIe slots), but no SATA 6.0 Gbps.

ECS Micro-ATX Motherboard
Enlarge picture
Other features include 6-channel HD audio, DVI, HDMI, UEFI BIOS and a D-Sub output, making the H61H2-MV very shrewd for something of its size.

We may have said that this is a micro-ATX motherboard and, indeed, ECS has labeled it as such, but the reality is a bit different.

Even with two PCIe slots, the platform is small enough that it might just fit in mini-ITX-compatible cases. As for the looks, ECS decided on an all-black PCB.

All in all, the motherboard might be a good fit for those who want to put together a strong HTPC or LAN Party gaming rig, although the lack of SATA III storage (SATA 6.0 Gbps) could be a bit off-putting. The price will be of much less than $100, or 76-100 Euro according to exchange rates.

World's Smallest Quad-Core PC Released by VIA

Showing that Intel's dismissive attitude towards it and ARM doesn't really matter, VIA Technologies has introduced the arguably smallest quad-core x86 system ever designed: VIA ARTiGO A1250.

The VIA ARTiGO A1250 is about as large as one of those old mobile phones that barely anyone uses these days.

For that matter, smartphones are thinner and smaller than it is, but not by a large margin.

Basically, the new PC is as large as a deck of playing cards, a size which belies its performance, to say the least.

Thanks to the 1.0 GHz VIA quad-core central processing unit and the VIA VX11H MSP (media system processor), all sorts of media can be played, up to and including stereoscopic 3D.

Thus, the ARTiGO A1250 can act as a standard PC or home server, maybe even as a means to turn an HDTV into a Smart TV, provided the display has a VESA mount at the back, where the PC can be placed.

Hotels might buy a few of these units for management purposes too, while digital signage and surveillance applications could benefit just as much. Home automation is yet another potential venue.

"By leveraging the ultra compact Pico-ITX form factor, the VIA ARTiGO A1250 is able to deliver a powerful x86 quad core computing experience in the smallest system design on the market," said Epan Wu, head of the VIA embedded platform division, VIA Technologies, Inc.

"The VIA ARTiGO A1250 boasts the latest technology with 3D stereo scopic display and USB 3.0 support for an unparalleled ultra compact computing experience, making small truly beautiful."

The power draw of the new system is 32W, which is much less than a normal light bulb, despite the presence of one 2.5" SATA HDD or Flash SSD, up to 8 GB RAM and a bunch of ports (VGA, 2 x USB 3.0, Gigabit LAN, audio/mic).

Finally, as a bonus, VIA provides customers with Windows Embedded Standard 7 (WES), WES2009 & Linux operating systems, plus third-party software security.

Viral of the Day: Henri Le Chat Noir Is Not Amused by Halloween

Henri Le Chat Noir is still as depressed as he was the last time we saw him in September this year. These days, he has even better reasons for feeling down, because everyone is going crazy about Halloween.

Check out the video above, Henri’s fourth online outing, in which he explains how little amused he is by Halloween and how only an “idiot” could really get into the festive spirit.

If you’ve seen his previous 3 videos, you know which “idiot” he’s talking about.

“This is not a happy time of year for a black cat who does not suffer fools,” Henri woefully says.

He also hates lies and hypocrisy, and Halloween has plenty of that, with people deliberately choosing to remain blind as to what is really scary in life.

“No one ever dresses as crippling self-doubt,” he says.

Trust me, this video is perfect to get your day started. Happy Halloween everyone, and enjoy!

Surfer Hospitalized After Shark Attack in Northern California

A 25-year-old surfer suffered a shark attack, off Bunker Surf Spot, North Jetty, in northern California, on October 30, at approximately 12:00 p.m.

A number of people were in the water at the time, and one witness drove the man to the hospital. Although he had been able to get to shore by himself, he was bleeding heavily.

An emergency medical technician helped apply pressure on the surfer's wounds before he was transported to hospital.

Emergency personnel dubbed the man's injuries life-threatening, and it is unclear at this point whether or not the surfer will survive the attack.

Witnesses have described the young surfer was found with 12-inch (30 cm) long gashes, starting at his ribs and ending below his hips, California Times Standard reported.

"It punctured all the way through. There were guts and meat hanging," Jason Gabriel, the witness to the attack that drove the unknown man to the hospital, said.

UK Metropolitan Police Arrests 3 Individuals Involved in Phishing Scam

The UK Metropolitan Police’s Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU) in collaboration with SOCA Cyber have arrested a number of three individuals suspected of being responsible for publishing over 2,000 phishing web pages on the Internet.

The sites they set up were designed to mimic the ones of various banks in an attempt to trick unsuspecting users into handing over their banking details.

According to authorities, the suspects – one Nigerian and two Romanians – have been arrested on October 29 at a Central London Hotel. They’re accused of conspiracy to defraud and money laundering.

“This is the first joint operation between the PCeU and SOCA Cyber as we move towards full integration and inception of the National Cyber Crime Unit on 1 October 2013,” Detective Superintendent Charlie McMurdie, head of the PCeU, explained.

“Th e dynamic nature and successful outcome of this operation, which has prevented distress and financial loss to numerous UK victims, clearly demonstrates the benefit of brigading resources and expertise in this increasing and specialist area of criminality.”

Toshiba Also Manages to Do Fine in the Third Quarter, Makes $722 Million

We’ve only just reported on ASUS's success during the third quarter of 2012, and already there is another company that is rejoicing at its good fortune and fortuitous investments.

In terms of corporate finances, this week is quite encouraging compared to the last few, during which we learned that AMD was down in the dumps and that it and a few other companies were going to fire many people just to get by.

While there are still scattered reports about sales slowing down during the third quarter (July-September), especially on the mobile market, most news is good.

It is good even for us regular customers, since each positive financial report means a lower chance for another company disappearing and, thus, ceasing to make those gadgets and computers everyone loves.

Without further ado, let us mention the money that Toshiba gathered in Q3 2012: $17.8 billion in sales, which is around 13.67 billion Euro, give or take.

The profit was quite small compared to it, of $722 million / 555 million Euro. Still, at least it is there, instead of the company registering a los s.

Digital products, home appliances and electronic devices did poorly, but the situation was saved by “social infrastructure” businesses, like the Thermal & Hydro Power Systems business, Transmission and Distribution Systems, Solar Photovoltaic Systems and Nuclear Power Systems businesses.

Unfortunately, operating profits and sales are expected to drop for the year (2012), so this is all just a small respite at best.

Obviously, the worldwide economy is still dragging itself on its elbows, and Toshiba is only avoiding the repercussions by the skin of its teeth, just like most others in this industry are.

Intel and Lenovo are the main two exceptions. The former is still making billions on top of billions, while the latter finally calls itself the top PC supplier worldwide.

Nokia Lumia 820 Up for Pre-Order in the UK

Mobile phone users in the UK can now place pre-orders for the Nokia Lumia 820 smartphone, ahead of its official landing on November 7.

Three retailers have already announced the availability of reservations for the device, namely The Carphone Warehouse, Tesco and Phones4U.

Users interested in the new device will be able to grab it for free with the signing of a contract agreement on monthly plans that start at £29.24. SIM-free, the device costs £380 ($613 / €471).

T he Carphone Warehouse has the new device available at this price tag, while Phones4U made it available for free on £31 a month.

Users might also want to know that Tesco also lists the new device as available for pre-order, at only £20.50 per month on Orange contracts.

Packing a fast 1.5GHz processor inside and a large 4.3-inch (480 x 800 pixel resolution) touchscreen display on the front, the smartphone can deliver high-end features to all those who will choose to purchase it.

Nokia also included an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back of this device, with Carl Zeiss optics and support for full HD video recording, thus making it even more appealing.

The Lumia 820 also features 8GB of internal memory, along with a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of external storage. 7GB of SkyDrive cloud storage also comes with the new device.

“Lumia 820 is also bless ed with plenty of power, and a 1.5GHZ dual-core processor will ensure anything you do will run quickly and efficiently. Whether it’s browsing the web or making the most of Nokia’s native apps, you can rest assured that there’ll be zero hang-ups,” Phones4U notes on its website.

Nokia also included a 1,650mAh battery inside the new mobile phone, along with support for wireless charging. To benefit from the feature, however, users will need to purchase a separate shell for the smartphone, as well as compatible chargers.

The Most Shared Words on Facebook During the Hurricane Were "We Are OK"

As Hurricane Sandy ravaged the US eastern coast, a lot of people turned to social media to keep in touch. This especially after the power went out in many places or, alternatively, after cell phone towers were knocked offline. Twitter, Facebook and company proved very useful.

While there was a lot of misinformation, on Twitter in particular, these sites were still one of the best ways of getting in touch with the people you know.

No surprise then that some of the most popular phrases on Facebook during and after the storm had to do with people telling everyone else they were OK.

In the US, the conversation on Facebook was focused entirely on the storm. People were either trying to communicate or sharing info about the damage and the problems with everyone else.

These were the top 10 most used phrases and words on Facebook in the US in the morning after the hurricane.

1. "we are ok"
2. "power" – "lost power," "have power," "no power"
3. "damage"
4. "hope everyone is ok"
5. "trees"
6. "made it"
7. "safe"
8. "thankful"
9. "fine"
10. "affected."

Kickstater Projects Debut in the UK

Kickstarter has started allowing UK projects to take a shot at getting funded, as the planned UK launch gets under way.

This will mean local projects will find it easier to seek and get funding as they'll be able to deal with the local banks. The move was announced a few months ago, but is only now kicking off.

People in the UK have been able to create new projects for three weeks now, Kickstarter wanted to give them time to put together a campaign and have it ready for today's launch.

This should also ensure that there are at least some projects ready to take people's money from day one in the UK.

These new projects will be listed among all of the other on Kickstarter, UK-based viewers will see the prices in pounds, but everyone else will pay the equivalent US dollar amount.

Like before, anyone around will be able to pledge a sum of money to both UK and US projects, though it's up to the creators to decide whether they can service foreign buyers or not.

Assassin's Creed 3 Review (PS3)

The Assassin's Creed series has been with us for quite some time, with developer Ubisoft Montreal delivering, with the help of the French company's array of global studios, lots of impressive action experiences that portrayed the fictional war between the brotherhood of the Assassins and the Knights Templar.

Now, with Assassin's Creed 3, the franchise is getting some major new features, from a new historical setting, that of the American Revolution, to a new ancestor for Desmond to control, in the form of Connor.

With new mechanics, a bigger open world, and plenty of changes to the combat system in order to reflect the new weapons used during the 1700s, Assassin's Creed 3 might be the most important game ever in the series.

Does it manage to complete its mission or does it end up getting desynchronized? Let's find out.

Story

Without a doubt one of the main features of the franchise, besides its impressive gameplay, is the story, in which players control Desmond, a current-day assassin who explores the memories of his ancestors using a device called the Animus.

He already went through many adventures alongside Altair in the first game and Ezio in the three games after that, and now Desmond is exploring the memories of his ancestors from around the time of the American Revolution, in order to find a special key and, hopefully, prevent the world from getting destroyed by a giant solar flare.

While you'll spend most of the game helping Connor (or Ratonhake:ton, as he's known among his native tribe), you actually start the game by controlling another character, in the form of Haytham Kenway, as he himself explores the British colonies in the New World.

Story-wise, Assassin's Creed 3 delivers one of the most sprawling plots in the history of the series, with one major twist early in the game that will surprise many fans. What's more, this is the first game that delivers a more realistic view of the war between the Assassins and the Templars, and how they strive, more or less, for the same goals, albeit through different methods.

Sadly, the end of the Desmond arc isn't that impressive, although it does bring some closure for fans, while at the same time opening up many new avenues that can be explored by future installments.

Review image
Enjoy a new game ...
... with a new main protagonist

Gameplay

Assassin's Creed 3 represents a huge shift in terms of mechanics for the series, as the American Revolution is a brand new historical period that's quite different from the ones already explored by previous games. While some of these changes work, most of them only end up complicating the whole experience.

Nowhere is this more different than in combat, as swords may still be used, but enemies will also employ muskets with bayonets as well as pistols in combat. While the same basic mechanics are still present, as you once again need to wait for an enemy to attack before countering, the presence of fire arms results in a much more hec tic experience.

Now, during any fight you engage in, you need to be on the lookout for enemies who are getting ready to fire upon you. If you see them, you can either attack or grab a nearby enemy to use as a human shield. While this may sound great, the actual human shield mechanic is quite dodgy and rarely works.

You can now more easily run into and out of combat but, seeing as how enemies are much more observant and more numerous throughout cities like Boston or New York, getting into fights is almost unavoidable and you can barely escape your pursuers.

Another anno ying trend in most of the missions in Assassin's Creed 3 is forced stealth. While previous games recommended sneaking and generally being a shadow, they didn't enforce this all the time. In the new game, almost every mission has one segment where you can automatically fail if you're spotted by a guard. Considering most enemies are extremely vigilant and quite observant, you'll end up repeating many segments until you figure out the ideal way of completing your tasks.

Free-running has been streamlined, as you now use just one button to get into "parkour" mode, but it can still become annoying, especially when you're exploring the Frontier. Here, there are only a few settlements with man-made buildings, so you'll have to jog through the wilderness while climbing trees and cliff faces.

While exploring the wilderness is one of the major new features of Assassin's Creed 3, it ends up becoming quite annoying, especially when trying to go up trees that act as viewpoints, as you'll no doubt fall a lot while trying to make Connor go up a certain branch.

The new game also boasts some truly sprawling environments, ranging from cities like Boston or New York, to the Frontier or your Homestead, which acts as a base for your exploits. While all the levels are quite impressive, they also mean that you'll spend a lot of time running from place to place.

You do unlock some Fast Travel options, but these are limited, and you can use horses, but the riding mechanics are quite problematic, as the animals sometimes stop because of small rocks or can barely be used for going up hills. As such, it's still better to walk around on foot.

Red Dead Redemption players will feel right at home in the game's Frontier area, as you can hunt animals, much like in Rockstar's classic Western experience. Once you trap animals through snares, kill them with your arsenal of weapons or through quick time events, when you're dealing with wolves and dangerous beasts, you can skin them and sell these items to traders.

While it's very much an Assassin's Creed game, as you still employ your trademark skills to find out details about your targets, the game focuses a bit too much on highlighting iconic moments from the American Revolution, like Paul Revere's famous ride to warn that the British are coming, which don't really fit with previous experiences in the series.

Like previous games, you do end up micro-managing your homestead, but the whole activity is way more complicated than in previous games, where you simply employed artisans that made you an hourly profit. Now, you need to actually manage your workers, craft items from the resources they can scavenge around the Homestead, and then send them on convoys to stores in the city. The whole thing is quite convoluted and you'r e probably better ignoring it and just hunting down chests and looting corpses to get extra money.

Another major feature of Assassin's Creed 3 is the Naval Warfare mechanic, as Connor commands his own ship, the Aquila, which can be used on a variety of side missions and in several main quests. Besides steering the ship, you also command your guns and must carefully maneuver it in battle so that you gain the upper hand on your enemies. The whole experience is quite impressive and feels like a breath of fresh air from the assassination missions.

Multiplayer

Ever since Brotherhood, Assassin's Creed games have delivered some pretty great online experiences, as players take on the role of Templar agents who t rain by using the Animus in virtual battles.

The same basic concept is applied, you enter a simulated environment where you need to hunt down your target, while trying to remain as inconspicuous as possible in order to prevent your own foe from detecting you.

Classic modes return, like Deathmatch, while new ones are introduced, like the Wolfpack one, which sees a team of up to four assassins try to take down AI opponents that become more skilled over the course of 25 stages. This provides a pretty intense experience and requires a lot of teamwork in order to remain within the time limits for each stage.

Graphics and Sound

Assassin's Creed 3 is a great-looking game, as the AnvilNext engine delivers some stunning vistas across different seasons, from the sun-drenched summer, to the fog and rain-infested autumn, to the snow-filled winter.

Sadly, at least on the PS3, there are areas where the visual quality drops, like in the detail of certain non-playable characters. What's more, the different trees and bushes found in the Frontier aren't that impressive and you'll find yourself climbing a lot of identical buildings or trees, especially the ones that act as viewpoints.

In terms of sound , the game is truly impressive, as the orchestral score transforms Connor's adventures into truly epic experiences, while the voice acting is top notch, as you encounter a variety of British accents, not to mention plenty of scenes where Connor and his fellow tribesmen and women talk in their native tongue.

Take care of your own ship ...
... and engage in economics

Conclusion< br />
Assassin's Creed 3 is a truly massive game that will easily require over 20 hours of your time. Sadly, in that period, you're treated with a rather mixed experience, as the game's combat is hit and miss (literally), the environments are a bit too big for their own sake, and there are plenty of forced stealth sections. What's more, while Connor's story is quite a roller coaster of emotions, Desmond's plot line ends in a not-too-impressive manner.

Even so, the game ends up delivering a pretty good experience that aims at introducing new elements into the series. While it doesn't exactly succeed, it's still quite good and shouldn't be missed by fans of the series.

Google's Haunted Halloween Doodle

Google's running a special logo for Halloween, as is tradition. Last year, a bunch of Googlers, from the doodle team but not only, got together to carve humongous pumpkins to make up the Google letters and the doodle was a timelapse of that.

This year, Google is going for a more traditional approach, with an interactive animated doodle. All you have to do is click around and discover all the secrets, not that they're so hidden.

Each door opens to reveal one of the ghostly Google letters, well the second one has two letters, technically. There are also a few other things you can click on, the crow, the trash can, the spider.

Overall, it's a cute doodle and a fitting one for Halloween, but it's not going to win any prizes. It's done in CSS3 and seems to be using Web Audio API for the sound, so it only works in Chrome.

GTA V Officially Confirmed for Spring 2013 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

The development team at Rockstar officially announces that it will launch their much-awaited Grand Theft Auto V during the spring of 2013 on the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the Xbox 360 from Microsoft.

The company also says that pre-orders will be offered on November 5 on both platforms for those who want to get the game early, although the developers have not offered any details on what goodies those who pre-order will get access to.

Sam Houser, who is one of the leaders of Rockstar and who has worked on the franchise since it was created, states, “Grand Theft Auto V builds on everything we’ve learned about open world game design. We can’t wait to share it with fans.”

Once again the team has said that Grand Theft Auto V will take place both in the city of Los Santos and the area around it, ranging from mountains to the ocean, modeled on present-day Southern California.

No other information on what the game will offer in terms of story or content is shared at this time.

With the launch coming in spring 2013, which means May at the latest, Rockstar will soon have to share more information with the fans of the series.

The official announcement does not mention anything about a PC version for Grand Theft Auto V.

One of the community officers of Rockstar ads in the comments for the official announcement: “Hey guys, glad to see so much enthusiasm about the r elease announcement. For those asking about the PC platform, we're currently focused on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game and don't have any details to share about a PC version at this time.”

It’s not clear whether this means that the game will not arrive on the PC or whether the port is just delayed.

The announcement also makes no mention of the Wii U from Nintendo.

Octomom in Rehab: Alcohol Problems the Cause, Not Pills

Nadya Suleman, the mother of 14 the media had long dubbed Octomom, has admitted herself to a rehabilitation center for what her rep calls an addiction to prescription pills, developed because of intense stress and anxiety. A new report suggests alcohol is actually at the root of the problem.

Radar Online has it on very good authority – a former nanny of Suleman’s – that she would actually drink like a sailor whenever she had the chance, regardless of the fact that she had then to drive her 14 kids back home.

The celebrity e-zine got a hold of two, very compromising pieces of evidence: a phone message left by Suleman’s own dad, Ed Doud, for the nanny, and a recording in which the nanny is trying to reason with Suleman that she’s not fit to drive in her state.

In the audio message, Doud is heard saying how worried he is about his daughter and how she’s endangering her and her kids’ life by getting behind the wheel when intoxicated.

Octomom, as it must already be known, has 14 children, all conceived through IVF: 6 older ones (“the big kids” referred below) and the octuplets.

“I'm worried about Nadya. She's not answering the phone. And I really worry about her. Sometimes she starts drinking vodka, whatever, so maybe she should not be driving,” Doud is heard saying in the phone message.

“I could pick up the kids tomorrow, I mean the big kids. I do n't know what to say. I have no idea what to say. She cannot drive the kids and drive herself and drive back here,” Octomom’s father says.

Speaking with Radar, the former nanny paints Suleman in a very unfavorable light: she would often get so drunk she could hardly stand, let alone walk or drive her own kids in the van home, and would just as often drive after a few drinks, with and without the children.

Suleman’s publicist has not yet addressed rumors of a possible alcohol problem.

“Nadya wanted to get off the Xanax she was prescribed by her doctor and learn to deal with her stress, exhaustion and anxiety with professional help with a team of doctors. Nadya wanted to deal with her issues and make sure she is the best mother she can be,” he said the other day in the official statement.

Infinite Gangnam Style Creates an Endless Loop That Doesn't Repeat Itself

Psy's Gangnam Style is an international phenomenon. We know this because it spawned countless memes and the views counter on YouTube continues to go up.

Despite getting bigger and bigger, the bubble hasn't burst yet, so the Infinite Gangnam Style hack put together by the people at Echo Nest comes at the nick of time.

Echo Nest's Paul Lamere, the hack's creator, has several of these under his belt already, but this is the first one that uses video as well.

"Thi s weekend at Music Hack Day Reykjavik I built a music hack called Infinite Gangnam Style. This hack takes the viral hit by Psy and creates a never ending, ever changing version of the song," he explained.

Like the name suggests, Infinite Gangnam Style lets you play the song and the video forever.

But, unlike the 10-hour YouTube edits or just putting the video on repeat forever, this hack actually mixes and matches the song and the video seamlessly into an endless but not repeating loop.

That's the beauty of pop songs, especially electronic ones, you can shuffle around the various parts and it will sound pretty much the same.

But if you don't want the app to randomly jump from one section to the other, you can get involved and become a desktop DJ by selecting any beat in the song to play at any given time.

"The app works by taking the audio and analyzing it with The Echo Nest analyzer to break it up into its individual beats," Lamere explained.

"Next, an analysis pass is run on all the beats finding each beat’s nearest similar sounding neighbors that fall within a similarity threshold," he said.

"Then, the song is played beat-by-beat – but with the added twist that any time we play a particular beat there’s a chance that we will transition instead to one of the beat’s similar sounding neighbors," he added.

"For a pop song like Gangnam Style there’s lots of repetition so there’s plenty of good transition points. The result is that we can loop through the song forever with the song always morphing," he concluded.

Ballmer: Apples iPad Is a Tablet You Cant Really Use

The Surface tablet, Microsoft’s big bet in a world dominated by Apple, is heavily criticized by competitors, despite the impressive success it recorded since the Redmond-based company released pricing information.

But this only happens because the Surface is the kind of device everyone needs, Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer said in an interview with CNBC. Apple’s iPad? Just the type of product you can’t really use, Ballmer added, emphasizing that the new Surface has everything it needs to reimagine the tablet market.

“I don’t think anybody has done a product that is the product that I see customers wanting,” Ballmer stated.

“You can go through the products from all those guys … and none of them has a product that you can really use. Not Apple. Not Google. Not Amazon. Nobody has a product that lets you work and play that can be your tablet and your PC. Not at any price point.”

Ever since Microsoft rolled out the Surface RT, it constantly described it as a two-in-one product, as it combines the best of two different worlds: laptops and tablets. It comes with a 3 mm thin keyboard that also serves as a cover and runs a special version of Windows 8.

“This is a first-class tablet that people can enjoy and appreciate,” Ballmer also added. “It’s a PC; it’s a tablet. It’s for play; it’s for work. It’s a got a great price . That product doesn’t exist today.”

Of course, the fruit-named company is yet to issue a comment on Ballmer’s statements, but given the fact that competition in the tablet market is fiercer than ever, expect more reactions soon.

Microsoft Refuses to Release Windows 8 Sales Figures

Windows 8, the brand new operating system released by Microsoft, is already generally available and, according to company CEO Steve Ballmer, sales numbers are very strong.

Ballmer told The Wall Street Journal that Windows 8 is an impressively attractive product, but he refused to provide accurate stats on the way the new OS performs in various markets.

He however hinted that Windows 8 is sold out in some specific stores, without mentioning their location.

"Numerically there's not really much that's interesting to report. If you were to call the retailers, they would say, 'Hey, off to a very good start.' We're out of stock a lot of places on touch [screen] machines," he said.

Of course, Microsoft has very high expectations when it comes to its new OS and expects to see around 400 million Windows 8 devices out there in less than 9 months.

XCOM Diary: Stress Is Great, Chances Frighten Me

XCOM: Enemy Unknown might be a poor choice for my gaming time as far as my real world health is concerned because I can actually feel my stress level increase while I am playing the new strategy title from Firaxis.

The tension is mostly linked to the great use of fog of war and the way the percentages play out when it comes to actually taking a shot or being the target of one.

Most if not all the alien units in XCOM see as far as the human soldiers do, but they also get a free set of evasion moves when they ar e detected.

This creates an interesting XCOM dilemma between setting up a trap and then triggering their detection in order to get some free shots and between simply spotting them with one operative in order to see how they spread out and then setting your team’s defense.

There’s tension for each movement I make with my team, especially when I chose to risk a long-range dash instead of simply moving cautiously.

And XCOM offers even more stress when shooting is involved because this is a game that makes sure you learn the difference between a good chance of something happening and a certainty.

I had 90 percent shots, a close range that ended in misses and then led to the death of my operative and the abandonment of an Ironman game.

I also had long-range sniper shots with severe penalties that managed to hit after the game told me that there was just a 10% success rate and actually won me a late game mission.

And each of these shots and many more were stressful, brought sweat to my brow and my palms and made me experience a tension that no other game of 2012 managed to deliver.

Free Microsoft Windows 8 Theme Brings Cityscape Walls on Your Desktops

Microsoft has just released a brand new theme aimed at Windows 8 users who want to customize their desktops with cityscape wallpapers.

The so-called Cityscapes Panoramic Theme is not only compatible with any Windows 8 machine, but also with those using two different monitors.

“Cityscapes Panoramic Theme offers users the possibility to use the same theme on both their monitors, so that the wallpaper automatically expands to both the screens (provided they have the same resolution),” Microsoft explains.

On the other hand, if you are using just a single monitor, the desktop background displays only the center of the cityscape photo. Available cities include Hong Kong, London, Kuala Lumpur and Guangzhou.

Nintendo Delays First-Party Wii U Games to Power Long-Term Success

Satoru Iwata, the president and the chief executive officer of Nintendo, says that it has voluntarily delayed a number of first-party Wii U video game in order to make the new home console interesting for players after the holiday launch season is over.

VG247 cites the executive speaking to investors and saying that, “If you look at how pre-orders are doing at the moment, it is not an exaggeration to say that Wii U is sure to sell well in this holiday season, as many of you are probably thinking.”

Nintendo acknowledges that success in 2013 is important but that the Wii U needs to sell during 2014 and beyond in order to create a solid platform on which developers will deliver great gaming experiences.

“Nintendo tends to release too many titles at the launch of a hardware system and as a result suffers a drop in new games for quite some time after launch, and for the Wii U launch, we are being very careful not to let it happen,” Iwata added.

The company also benefited from the big interest that third-party companies, from Electronic Arts to Ubisoft and Activision, have shown in the Wii U, bringing many franchises to the new device on launch day.

The Nintendo CEO and president says that part of the Wii U success will depend on the impact of Nintendo Land, the new mini-game collection that could power the success of the hardware much as Wii Sports drove sales of the original Wii.

Nintendo bel ieves that it can sell 5.5 million Wii U units before the end of its current fiscal year on March 31, 2013, something that analysts tend to dispute.

The Wii U will be out on all major markets starting with November 18 in the United States and ending on December 8 in Japan.

New Chromebook Ads Look Low Budget, As If Made on the Chromebook Itself [Video]

Google is continuing its barrage of Chromebook ads to promote the new and ultra-cheap laptop it has just introduced. These new ads continue the "for everyone" campaign. Google ads have always been minimalistic and have always featured little of the product they're trying to sell.

But these couple of last ones set a new landmark in minimalistic design, essentially, they're made up of just a bunch of text which explains what the new Chromebooks are "for" and a shot of the new device at the very end.

The distinctive music helps, but other than that, these ads are as low budget as they get, there's no need for actors, just one guy with a laptop could have put them together in a few tens of minutes.

Having said that, it's very unlikely that this is actually how they were made, Google probably had a huge team and a lot of resources thrown at them.

Green Tip: New App Blocks Bathroom Noises, Helps Save Water

When it comes to using the bathroom in public, most people fear that other people might end up hearing various noises which are pretty much taboo.

Therefore, there are many who resort to flushing the toilet prior to sitting on it, just to make some other noises that can cover up the taboo ones.

Naturally, the idea of wasting water just to keep others from hearing unpleasant sounds doesn't sit very well with environmentalists.

The good news is that, thanks to the new Thirst Flusher app, now widely used in China, bathroom noises can be masked while making sure no precious water resources get wasted.

Thus, this app can produce as many as eight different noises, which can successfully block all other ones, and one of these is the run-off-the-mill sound of a flushing toilet.

As if this weren't enough, it also lets you know just how much water you saved by using it, so overall there hardly is anything not to like about it.

Notebook Makers Decide Not to Sell Many Windows RT Tablets

Up until the launch of Microsoft's new operating system and the long-awaited Surface tablet, notebook brands were planning to sell as many Windows RT slates of their own as possible.

It is reported that this is no longer the case. Despite the Surface having been launched a relatively short time ago, the fuss about it has decreased.

Dell, ASUS, Samsung and Lenovo estimate Windows RT-based tablet shipments of below 50,000 (for each). They are focusing on Windows 8 and Intel Clover Trail CPUs instead.

Sony, Toshiba and HP turned out to be even more blunt and decided not to release Windows RT tablets at all.

Nokia, previously partnered with Compal for a Windows RT release, has also decided to, if not cancel, at least postpone its own contribution.

With each passing day, it looks like Microsoft is becoming more Apple-like. Pretty soon, Surfac e may be the only Windows RT tablet to speak of.

On Monday, Google made official its new Android 4.2 operating system flavor, and also announced updates for a series of apps and features for existing devices.

Google Maps for Android was one of the applications updated in the process, now providing users with an improved format for search suggestions, Google notes.

The application arrives on devices with all the features and capabilities that users were already accustomed with when running it on their devices.

It offers detailed maps with 3D buildings, voice guided turn-by-turn GPS navigation, live traffic information, Google Maps Street View, indoor maps for select airports, hotels, retail stores, and more in select locations, as well as driving, public transit, biking, and walking directions.

Google Maps for Android also offers Navigation capabilities (currently in Beta). The application is available for download from Softpedia via this link.

Gmail Completely Redesigns the "Compose" Experience, Now More Like Chat

Gmail is getting a new Compose dialog, a completely redesigned one. Given that writing emails is a large part of using Gmail and email in general, the change is a big one.

As such, the new feature won't be unveiled to all users just yet, Google is testing it with a few for now and will be gradually rolling it out over the next few months as the kinks are ironed out.

"How many times have you been writing an email and had to reference something in another message? Saving a draft, opening the old email, and then reopening your draft wastes valuable minutes. The new compose pops up in a window, just like chats," Google explains the big change.

The new compose dialog looks and feels like a chat tab. It doesn't replace the main Gmail view, it sits on top of it, making it much easier to switch back and from a message or the inbox to the compose window.

Better recipient management in Gmail
Enlarge picture
The change should make it easier to multitask, by keeping more info in just one page rather than requiring users to switch back and forth between pages. But that's not all.

"The new compose is designed to let you focus on what's important: your message. The controls are still there when you need them but get out of the way when you don’t," Google added.

"We’ve even added some new features like the ability to easily insert inline images and have more to come. And, when you add recipients to your message, you'll see profile pictures of your contacts in autocomplete helping you find the right person faster," it said.

The changes apply to reply messages as well. Google's not providing any screenshots yet, but it says reply message should better fit inside the conversation thread.

The box also expands as your message gets longer, while also keeping contr ols like the recipients and other buttons in view.

Verizons Windows Phone 8X by HTC Comes with Wireless Charging

One of the features that Verizon’s customers who will purchase the Windows Phone 8X by HTC from the wireless carrier will benefit from will be wireless charging, an option missing from the device at other carriers.

Apparently, the carrier’s flavor of the device will sport the same size as the original, even with the additional feature packed inside.

This version of the device will be available exclusively in the United States, The Verge reports, adding that Verizon is set to provide additional info on the matter in the not too distant future.

Yesterday, the company went official with plans to make Windows Phone 8 devices available for its customers, including the 8X, but did not provide details related to the wireless charging capabilities of the device.

Windows Phone 8X will hit shelves in Califo rnia Blue, Graphite Black and Flame Red before Thanksgiving at $199.99 on contract.

Curiosity's Now Curious About the Martian Rocks Around It [Gallery]

Curiosity is continuing to play in the sand at Rocknest. While its CheMin and SAM instruments are getting a test run, analyzing samples of sand and, in the case of SAM, the Martian atmosphere, Curiosity is using its free hand to look around some more.

Last time around, it scoured the more distant locations and put together a panoramic view of its surroundings.

This time, it's taking a closer look at the things immediately next to it, like a couple of rocks like the ones that give Rocknest its name.

"The rover completed its third round of using vibration of scooped Martian soil to scrub the interior surfaces of the sample-processing mechanisms on the rover's arm," NASA provided an update.

"Also on Sol 81, the rover's Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument completed an analysis of a sample of Martian atmosphere," it added .

The next Martian day, on Sol 82, its Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) instrument snapped the photos of the rocks you see in the gallery below. It also prepared another soil sample for the CheMin instrument.

Android 4.2 Lets You Snap Street View Photos, Share Them on Google Maps

Google's new Nexus line of phones and tablets runs the also new Android 4.2, which is still labeled as Jelly Bean. This would indicate that it's a minor update, but it does come with a few interesting new features.

Top among them is the Photo Sphere, which aims to make it possible for everyone to create 360 degree Street View photos using nothing but their phone.

The best part about these photos is that, just like Street View ones, you can put them online and view them in Google Map s.

"Now, with Photo Sphere, the new camera mode that’s part of the latest version of Android 4.2, Jelly Bean, you can photograph an entire scene—up, down, and all around—to create a 360º immersive experience," Google explained.

"You can easily choose to share your Photo Spheres to Google Maps so the entire world can enjoy the beauty of your favorite places," it added.

"Your images will help make Google Maps more comprehensive, and enable other travelers to get an accurate preview of a location before they arrive," it said.

Google Maps already has a big helping of user-created photos. Geo-photo fans have uploaded a huge number of photos via Panoramio, but Google also sources public and geo-tagged photos from Flickr, Picasa and other places.

All of these are plain old photographs. Google Maps did have some 360 degree imagery, courtesy of 360 Cities. But their number is abo ut to be dwarfed by the amount of photos bound to land in Google Maps from enthusiastic Android users.

Granted, the feature is only available to very few people now, those that are running Android 4.2. Once the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 10 start shipping, on November 13, it's going to be a while before a lot of people are running the latest Android.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist Investigates Violence and the War on Terror

David Footman, the cinematic director working on Splinter Cell: Blacklist, says that the upcoming stealth and action video game will aim to explore the way violence and war on terror are currently blended in the way the United States are battling terror threats.

The developer talks to VG247 and comments on the type of violence in the previous game in the series, Conviction, comparing it to the Taken movie series which features Liam Neeson.

Footman says, “It’s a great action convention that works be cause it allows people to identify with it and enables a certain level of justification because the central character can kill anyone to get his daughter back and the audience will cheer.”

The new game in the Splinter Cell series will see main character Fischer become the leader of a new Fourth Echelon organization that needs to protect the United States from terrorist threats, no matter where they are coming from.

That means that the player will be in service of the state as it deals with terrorists and that is a theme that resonates with themes from the real world.

Footman says, “That’s the new war on terror: going out and taking the war to the enemy. Now, whether you’re the pilot that shot that missile or whether you’re the guy on the ground like Sam Fisher, you can’t be immune to the violence and it’s an interesting concept for us to explore.”

The plot of Blacklist will deal with twelve terrorists who initiate a countdown of attacks that will not stop until the United States retreat from all their overseas involvements.

The core new mechanic of the game is called killing in motion and gives gamers a way of taking out enemies seamlessly while on the move.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist is being prepared for launch on the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 and will be available to players during the spring of 2013.
